New Englanders Favor Classic Designs

When asked for a portrait of their ‘typical client,’ New England-based designers paint a diverse picture. “Affluent professionals in higher-end neighborhoods and homes north of Boston through southern New Hampshire and Maine” are Danvers, MA-based Heartwood Kitchens’ bread and butter, according to owner and managing member Mike Serafino.

Blank Canvas for Heartwood Kitchens

Nancy Hanson, co-owner of Heartwood Kitchens, enjoys getting to design a kitchen in a large, straightforward space. It’s a bonus if she is given free rein to configure the windows and doors. Wall space, after all, is the hard currency of kitchen design. Both of these opportunities came together in a project that involved building a new home on a tear-down’s footprint.

Heartwood Kitchens Room to Cook

Lisa Scarfi and Wayne Saltsman were so used to their Burlington, Massachusetts, kitchen feeling too small that they assumed their planned remodel would require extending the back of the house. The room’s main design flaw was that it had six doorways, making it useful as a hub of family life but inefficient as a place to cook.

It’s easy to see why Marylou and Bob Graham love to eat at their kitchen table. Before they hired Heartwood Kitchens to gut the room, it had a dated 1980s look that was at odds with the rest of their 1890s Dutch Colonial home.
